Accountability ensures the proper use of public resources and the achievement of development goals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The performance and integrity of public officials have proven to be essential factors in development. Your profession and your work make a significant contribution to the development of our respective countries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By combating illegal practices and corruption, and by fostering a culture of performance and transparency, you help ensure that public resources are used efficiently. You serve as a watchdog over the actions of governments and public authorities. Your mission is difficult, but it is necessary. \u201cWe are therefore counting on your professionalism and dedication.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Djibouti, His Excellency Isma\u00ebl Omar Guelleh, the 12th meeting of the FIGE Steering Committee and the 8th FIGE International Symposium were held at the Kempinski Palace Hotel in Djibouti from June 7 to 9. The conference was attended by representatives from the member countries of the FIGE Steering Committee, partner institutions\u2014including the European Union Anti-Fraud Office\u2014members of the government and other officials from the Republic of Djibouti, as well as prominent experts in good governance who came to participate in the international symposium.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day of June 7, 2022, began with the opening ceremony of this important conference, presided over by the President of the Republic of Djibouti, His Excellency Mr. Isma\u00ebl Omar Guelleh.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several dignitaries took the podium, beginning with the Inspector General of the Republic of Djibouti and Executive Secretary of FIGE, Mr. Hassan Issa Sultan, who emphasized from the outset that the presence of the President of the Republic of Djibouti at the event demonstrates the importance that he and his government place on good governance and the performance of the public sector, which is the guarantor of an effective administration capable of meeting our continent\u2019s development goals. He also praised the unwavering support of the Djiboutian authorities\u2014and first and foremost His Excellency the President of the Republic\u2014for our association\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Executive Secretary then outlined FIGE\u2019s achievements over its 16-year history, highlighting the expansion of the network, which has grown from five founding members to 26 institutions from 20 African countries. In addition, the establishment of a training institute dedicated to building the capacity of inspectors, controllers, and auditors from FIGE member institutions, while also serving as a hub for fostering innovative ideas and proven best practices in the field of public sector auditing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chair of the Steering Committee, Mr. El Hassen Zein, Inspector General of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, stated that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which, as elsewhere in the world, has significantly slowed the organization\u2019s activities, FIGE has strived to maintain cooperation among the supreme audit institutions of member countries in order to promote the exchange of best practices and enhance capabilities in preventing and combating corruption.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To conclude the official speeches, the President of the Republic of Djibouti, His Excellency Isma\u00ebl Omar Guelleh, addressed the audience, noting that the FIGE association was founded here in Djibouti in 2006 with the support of the Djiboutian government. This pan-African organization aimed to become a key player in the field of evaluation and strategic planning in public administration. Today, 16 years after its founding, FIGE has achieved its goals, and we take great pride in the fact that its headquarters are located in Djibouti and that the Inspector General of the State of Djibouti serves as its Executive Secretary. For the Djiboutian government, good governance and public performance are key priorities in building an efficient administration and public services capable of effectively serving the people of Djibouti.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President of the Republic went on to emphasize the principles of good governance, particularly the principle of accountability, which requires officials to fully accept responsibility whenever acts of mismanagement, abuse, or fraud are uncovered by IGE investigations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He concluded his speech by praising the work of the General Inspectorate of the State of Djibouti, stating that \u201cthe mission of the General Inspectorate of the State lies at the heart of all government policies, as its purpose is to promote good governance and enhance the performance of public administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the opening of the meeting, the members of the Executive Committee attended the committee\u2019s regular meeting. They approved the agenda items along with the supporting documents.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These include the activity and financial reports of FIGE and IFIGE, as well as the audit reports issued by the external auditors of these two institutions for the 2021 fiscal year.
