Representatives of FIGE member institutions and a group of guests including public figures, senior officials from the Angolan administration and public and private institutions in the host country, as well as representatives of foreign ministries accredited in Angola, development partners and international experts gathered on 23 October for the FIGE international symposium to exchange and share their experiences, expertise and best practices on the theme of ‘The fight against corruption and money laundering: investigation, enforcement and cooperation’.
This theme fits perfectly with the objectives of FIGE’s 2019-2027 strategic plan and contributes fully to improving the performance and capacity for action of member institutions by strengthening the capabilities of their inspectors and auditors.
Several renowned panellists from various backgrounds, including the World Bank’s Vice-Presidency for Integrity, the European Union’s Anti-Fraud Office, the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and experts from FIGE member institutions took turns sharing their knowledge and expertise in the areas of investigation, law enforcement and cooperation in the fight against corruption and money laundering. The tools, instruments and networking activities to be developed within the framework of cooperation and collaboration were also presented to participants.
The normative and regulatory framework; enforcement, the missions and scope of intervention of supreme audit institutions (SAIs), and cooperation with a national and international vision enabled the audience to gain an understanding of the challenges, but also to exchange views and issue recommendations aimed at improving the work of supreme audit institutions in the fight against corruption and money laundering.
Among the recommendations proposed are, among others, the need to develop the legal framework to better deal with economic and financial offences, particularly those related to corruption; the importance of international criminal cooperation in the fight against corruption and asset recovery; and the strengthening of the vital role of civil society and its representative structures, particularly in terms of raising awareness and providing training on issues related to the fight against corruption.
This international event was a success both in terms of organisation and in terms of sharing experiences and best practices. It allowed participants to take full advantage of the high-quality discussions and the varied and inspiring expertise of the speakers.
These important events in the life of our organisation have demonstrated, if proof were needed, the commitment of its members to the efforts undertaken to provide innovative and effective solutions aimed at improving the quality of interventions and missions assigned to FIGE member institutions.
